Sea Water Filter



As oil and gas reservoir produces its fluids, the energy contain in the reservoirs is slowly depleted to a point when it is not economic to produce the fluids from the reservoir. Hence, reservoir energy management holds the key to production optimization.


One method to maintain oil production from an oil field is to maintain its reservoir pressure. There are several ways to do this and water injection is one of them.


Water can be injected in structural pattern (pressure maintenance) or in peripheral pattern (increase sweep efficiency). Injected water must be treated before can be injected into the reservoir.



The use seawater as the medium for pressure maintenance must comply with maximum TSS (Total Suspendable Solids) acceptable based on reservoir rock properties. Non-conformance to this requirement can lead to reservoir’s porosity and permeability damage. Solid suspended in seawater in injection wells subsequently pushes and fills pores that were filled by hydrocarbons (oil and gas), so that the solids will settle longer in the reservoir. Solid contains in seawater can damage production tubing during injection process, especially at high injection rate. Tubing wear can led corrosion in the long term, which may require costly maintenance.


Sea Water Filter (SWF) is a set of filtration equipment to reduce impurities/suspended solid (TSS) contain in seawater. Sea Water Filter units are installed in injection wells to minimize the negative impact to reservoir.

      The filtration principle is using new filter materials inside the tank.

      The advantage of having round tank is minimizing space required to install the tank.

      This advantage is really important especially on offshore installation where space is premium.


The system consists of 3 tank filter in series to ensure that filtered water meets customer requirements.


Backwash water is intended to reverse circulate the filters in the event that too much solids deposited into the filter. This is also to ensure that water is uniformly go through the filter area

CNOOC SES utilized seawater injection into reservoir to maintain reservoir pressure. Seawater is treated to ensure that the injected water meets the minimum requirements for Total Suspendable Solids (TSS) to avoid pore plugging. A filtration system was installed on the platform and data was collected and analyzed to ensure injected water does not exceed CNOOC requirements.


CNOOC SES have been using 2 sets of seawater filter system in the field for the last 3 years and have been successfully maintain TSS as per customer requirement.
